Addressing the Cashier That Made Me Absolutely Without Words – My Hat's Off to You
This occurred on a weekend morning, and I felt in a foul mood, topping off my mum’s car. This was a typical gas station that operates as a supermarket, meaning there's a chance of joining a queue customers carrying goods of somewhat expensive items. This is a dreadful thing to occur when your only desire is to complete a simple refueling. Terrible.
My position was fourth among those waiting. Just one employee working, a young woman. Something stood out to her presence. When the faffer at the front of the queue had finally paid for a cleaning product, a baked snack, and a carton of eggs, It seemed to me overhearing the cashier tell him an excellent day. Odd. Perhaps I’d misheard, or perhaps she spoke and used a mocking tone. I wondered if she might actually be an ally in the war on delays, sharing my contempt for those who delay straightforward customers such as myself.
I moved up, now third in line. The next shopper of our group finished pumping gas with notable efficiency. Again, the phrase came: “Wishing you a marvelous day.” To be precise, it was “have a wonderful day”. Someone from the US? In Stourbridge? She had the accent, and few locals tells people those exact words, or merely a pleasant day. Highly unusual. You don’t get many Americans visiting this town, and definitely not holding jobs in fueling spots or anywhere else.
Now I stood second. Behind a poor older woman dealing with a lengthy struggle with her basket, her groceries, her purse and her rewards card. The process dragged on. Once completed, the woman also was wished an excellent day. Yes, American for sure. Confirming it was possible by making a witty remark in her direction, to observe that response as they gaze at you, stoically, and reply with genuine earnest: “That is quite humorous.” But I couldn’t think of a funny comment to utter.
Ultimately, I accepted for the absolute sincerity – or a performance of it, that equates to identical in effect – while she stared straight at me, to my very core, and wished me to have a great day. It improved my mood. A positive experience.
