RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts down to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
