The British tennis star secured the biggest success of his career by rebounding from a early deficit to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had before defeated Alcaraz on two separate matches, this victory signifies Norrie's first ever victory over a current world No 1.

"Huge. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who is now the latest UK male player in the record books to defeat a world No 1. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I fell in the initial match of qualies here. I just sought to enjoy my tennis in the latter part of the year. To get a win like this, it's the greatest win of my professional life, my initial victory over the top player and arguably the most confident player in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, seeded 31st in the world, also ended Alcaraz's supreme run of nine consecutive finals and 17 straight elite tournament wins, which represented the top run of performances in the Spanish star's developing career.

Match Analysis

Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently to a win in the beginning as he cruised past the opening set. Nevertheless, Norrie slowly worked himself into contention by executing with improved accuracy and engaging the Spaniard into extended, demanding exchanges. His relentless steadiness and reliability steadily left its mark.

During large parts of the contest, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he had difficulty to get his timing right off his groundstrokes. The rising talent looked notably uneasy hitting his forehand, which has been the most effective stroke in the world for most of this season, committing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a overall of 54 unforced errors. Opposing him, the British player gave Alcaraz so few mistakes, keeping up his steadiness, fitness and depth all match while delivering effective serves and choosing his moments to force himself into the court and play aggressively.
