UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman containing several personalities within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate personas, each with unique fears and drives. These souls can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
